HUTCHINSON  — Five meets, five second-place finishes.

McPherson High’s boys swimming team continues to bang on the door, but just can’t seem to knock it down.

The Bullpups finished second in the Hutchinson Invitational on Tuesday, trailing only Andover Central.

“An interesting meet to say the least,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “We finished second behind Andover Central. They have a really strong team with more numbers than us.  This is the third meet we've been in with them, we beat them by 8 points at Maize. I understand that this is their first year as a high school program. We were without Eric Gaeddert for the meet as he had to sit out a meet due to KSHSAA requirements on the maximum number of meets a swimmer can swim in a season. That would have put us closer to them, but not sure if we could have pulled out the victory. They will be in our league championship this year so we have that challenge ahead of us.”

Rece Reiman qualified for state in winning the 100 backstroke, while Will Powers won the 500 freestyle in a state-qualifying time. Powers now has qualified for state in six events as Morrow said he likes his versatility. Dawson VanGoethem had a splendid time in winning the 100 freestyle.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Powers, Dawson VanGoethem, Jori VanGoethem and Gavin Soukup also earned a state time as MHS will be well represented at state when it rolls around. Jori VanGoethem earned a state time in the 100 breaststroke.

“We used this meet to get some guys in different events, so overall I'm really pleased with a second-place finish,” Morrow said.

The Bullpups head to Salina on Thursday, with South, Central, Derby and Central Christian providing the opposition. Morrow said he’s interested to see how the Bullpups fare with the Salina schools.
