It’s the true litmus test for McPherson High’s wrestling team here Thursday.

El Dorado brings a No. 3 Class 4A state ranking to town for a key AVCTL Division III dual at the Auxiliary Gym.

A packed house is expected for the 6 p.m. match. MHS is 10-2 in duals, winning some by narrow margins.

“We'll have our hands full with El Dorado,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “There will be some swing matches that will be huge, as well as bonus and pin points.”

The Wildcats have a roster chockfull of ranked wrestlers and state contenders. Kretzer said they are particularly strong at 120, 170 and 220, where they return state placers.

The Bullpups, unfortunately, could be short-handed.

“We took a big hit losing Brynton Crews to an injury last weekend, but hopefully we get Alex Grennan (concussion) back for the dual,” Kretzer said. “I've got the dual coming down to the wire unless one of us gets pin points in a tight match. Our depth will help us, as we will fill all our weights. We're excited. Hope we get a good crowd.”

MHS then goes to Newton for the annual Tournament of Champions on Friday, which has a field that’s even stronger than state since it features many top 6A and 5A schools.
