NEWTON — It’s now nine-up, nine-down for both McPherson eighth-grade girls basketball teams.

The Bullpup teams improved to 9-0 on Thursday with a sweep of Newton.

The A-team was a 44-11 winner as Emma Malm fired in 19 points and was augmented by Grace Pyle with 10.

“The A-team got off to a great first quarter by scoring 21 in that quarter,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “This group continues to jump on teams early and our defense makes it difficult for teams to get into what they want to run.”

The B-team outlasted Newton 24-15 as Kenzee Godwin’s 8 points led the Bullpups.

“Both B-teams went into the game undefeated, so it was a great challenge for the girls to  step up to and they did,” Crawford said. “We continue to compete and play tough. This group always plays with a lot of effort. The girls were excited to beat a undefeated team.”

MMS is off until Thursday when it plays at Derby.

MMS A (44) — Berg 1, Alexander 6, Beam 8, Pyle 10, Malm 19.

MMS B (24) — Berlanga 2, Malm 3, Beam 3, Alexander 3, Myers 5, Godwin 8.
