After a slow start to their basketball season, McPherson’s eighth-grade A-boys are now past the .500 mark as they eased by Newton 39-32 on Thursday.
The Bullpups are now 5-4. Max Alexander’s 16 points led the way.
“The A-game was one of the most physical games I have ever coached,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “And we did not fold under pressure. I was happy to see we matched Newton, a bigger team in the physicality. After a step back at Salina South, I felt like we took another two steps forward in our progress as a team. We showed brilliance collapsing multiple players on their bigs and rebounded against a bigger team very well tonight.”
The B-team lost for only the second time in nine games, 39-37. EJ Hein had the hot hand with 12 points.
“The B-team was able to close the gap in the fourth quarter led by EJ Hein,” Brown said. “The game came down to the final second and we just fell a bucket short. It was a balanced attack in the B-game though with everyone on the team scoring except one guy.”
MMS is home on Thursday to take on Derby.
