As the basketball season is evolving, so are the balance and depth for the McPherson High girls.

After leaning heavily during the early part of the season on the dynamic junior duo of Taylor Robertson and Mandi Cooks, the other Bullpups have started to pick up the pace.

Nine Bullpups scored during a sensational 38-14 first half on Friday and the Bullpups went on for an impressive 70-27 victory over an Andale team that entered the night 5-3.

"It was good to see us play four quarters," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "The last couple of games we've had great first halves, but the second half especially against Circle was not very good… so tonight was good to put four quarters together and finish the game."

The triumph was highlighted by some remarkable 3-point Bullpup shooting as they made 11 of 24 during the first three quarters, which put the game into running clock. They added one more in the final period, finishing 12 of 26 to just 2 of 5 for Andale, a difference of 30 points.

"The girls did a great job of swinging the basketball and getting open 3s," Strathman said. "Also we got some transition 3s where some good decisions were made, so that was good to see."

Robertson finished 24 points and Cooks added 12, but 10 Bullpups in all scored.

The victory was the seventh straight for MHS and the team is riding a wave of confidence as it will take a 9-1 record into Tuesday's showdown at the Roundhouse with No. 1-ranked Newton in what is a girls-only game.

"They have a 6-3 girl, but probably their best player who makes them go is a 5-11 athlete, as a good an athlete as we'll see all year," Strathman said. "They're going to be a load. Hopefully we'll get a good crowd out here."

The MHS JVs stayed on a roll with a 57-21 rout. MHS' depth was again on display as nine players scored, including 19 by a red-hot Claire Yowell as she drained five 3-pointers.

In the C-game, it was a three-pronged attack that sparked the Bullpups to a 56-49 victory. Katelyn Beam’s 16 points led the Bullpups, while Andrea Sweat scored 14 and Cassie Cooks chipped in with 12.
