The Hutchinson Salthawks never knew what hit them.

The Manhattan Indians scored 12 points before the Salthawk fans had settled into their seats and rode a 19-2 beginning Thursday to a 53-35 victory in the opening game of the 53rd annual McPherson Invitational.

The Indians move on to Friday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal game against the winner of Wichita Heights and Blue Valley West.

Manhattan’s Tommy Ekart scored 8 straight points in just over a minute at the outset as the Indians played at a breathtaking pace.

But they cooled off, going nearly 6 minutes without a basket in the second quarter while Hutchinson was regaining its footing. The Salthawks did get it down to 23-13 at half, making just 5 of 23 shots, but Manhattan started the second half on a 9-2 rip to take any semblance of suspense out of the game.

The Indians were especially stifling on the defensive end as their quickness and pressure led to the Salthawks making just 13 of 40 shots. To Hutchinson's credit, it was outscored by just a single point the final 26 minutes.

Ekart led Manhattan with 14 points and Cade Roberts chipped in with 10. DeAndre Baugh's 10 points led Hutchinson.
