The Maize Eagles went nearly the first 4 minutes without scoring against Mill Valley in Game 3 of the McPherson Invitational on Thursday.

After the defending Class 5A state champion Jaguars led 5-0 early, the thoughts of a second straight upset briefly wafted through the air as the crowd was still buzzing about Blue Valley West’s stunner of Wichita Heights in the game before.

But Maize scored 25 of the next 30 points to live up to the premise that a No. 1 seed should dominate a No. 8 seed with a 61-29 victory.

The Eagles, who had lost their two previous games leading into the tournament, will play either McPherson or Shawnee Mission East in Friday’s 8:15 spotlight game.

After Maize scored the last 11 points of the first quarter, it outscored the Jaguars 14-5 in the second period to open up a 25-10 halftime lead even though it made just 8 of 31 shots, while Mill Valley was a meager 4 of 20.

The Jaguars managed to stay within shouting distance of the Eagles, but were too offensively challenged to mount a serious threat.

Grant Bugbee led the Eagles with 15 points, John Short had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Caleb Grill added 10 points.

Ike Valencia led the Jaguars with 6 points. They shot just 13 of 47, 1 of 14 from 3-point.
