DERBY — Ella Schmid had the hot hand for McPherson’s seventh-grade A-girls in a 26-18 victory over Derby on Thursday.
Schmid fired in 14 points as MMS improved to 7-3.
“We had a slow start with too many missed shots and some defensive lapses,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “However, the third quarter the girls came out with better energy. I liked our defensive rotation and help-side effort. We made 10 of 14 free throws, which was our best percentage of the season. We will look to run our offensive plays with more execution.”
The B-team lost 22-15 as Sophia Herrera, Rhian Swanson and Reiley Wells all scored 4 points as MMS dropped to 4-6.
“The girls hustled, played big on defense, rebounded well and gave what we asked them to on offense,” MMS coach TJ Jackson said. “In order to improve as a whole team, we can fix some of the small mistakes that just occur too often. The girls are getting better each week.”
MMS A (26) — Schmid 14, Labertew 6, Howard 5, Pelzel 1.
MMS B (15) — Herrera 4, Swanson 4, Wells 4, Pearcy 2, Unruh 1.
