GOESSEL — Elyria Christian Junior High’s A-boys were given a test by Goessel for a half, but blew the game open on Thursday with a splendid second half for a 45-16 victory.
“It was a scary first half with Ben Unruh picking up three fouls in the first quarter and Goessel scoring a last-second 3-pointer to make it only a 4-point difference,” Elyria coach Shawn Stucky said. “Plagued with foul trouble, injuries and players maxed out of quarters for the night, we knew we had to survive with virtually no subs. We changed our defensive strategy, and the guys executed it almost to perfection, only allowing Goessel 4 points in the second half.”
Zach Stucky and Seth Redenbaugh scored 12 points apiece to lead the Junior Eagles.
The B-team grinded out a 16-9 win behind 8 points by Grant Peters.
Elyria’s C-team was outscored 5-0 in overtime as Goessel was a 27-22 winner despite a 14-point explosion by Alec Huddle.
Elyria A (45) — Stucky 12, Unruh 4, Anderson 8, Hobson 9, Redenbaugh 12.
Elyria B (16) — Huddle 2, Anderson 6, Peters 8.
Elyria C (22) — Wiggers 4, Huddle 14, Clark 2, Mitchell 2.
