The expected rout took a little longer to materialize than expected.

Wichita Heights, mentioned greatly as a pre-tournament favorite, needed the better part of a half to shake off pesky Hutchinson, but eventually the talent differential took over as the Falcons scored a 81-52 victory over the Salthawks in Friday’s first consolation game in the McPherson Invitational.

Heights, shaking off the emotional damage of Thursday’s stunning opening-round loss to Blue Valley West, led only 16-14 after a quarter and it was still a 5-point game late in the half before the Falcons stretched it to 40-33 at the break.

The second half was mostly all Heights as it pushed the lead to a comfortable margin as it constantly turned the ‘Hawks over as they finished with 24 mechanical errors.

Smooth Tyrell Andrews had his second great game in as many nights with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Heights and Devin Davis lit it up for 20. Braxton Kirkendoll chipped in with 16 for good measure.

Heights was 32 of 63 from the field and made 6 of 12 treys, while pounding Hutch on the glass with a 39-22 rebounding advantage.

Kolby Holmberg scored 17 for Hutch.

The Falcons will play the winner of  Shawnee Mission East and Mill Valley at 3:15 p.m. Saturday for fifth place, while Hutchinson plays the day’s opener for the third time in a row in the seventh-place game at 1:30.
