Getting up emotionally for a consolation game often is a difficult task.

Not for Shawnee Mission East.

The Lancers, despite losing to McPherson on Thursday in the first round of the Bullpups’ Invitational in the late game, showed up for Friday’s Sunshine Bracket with a determined, not-to-lose attitude.

The spirited Lancers jumped on defending Class 5A champion Mill Valley, which continues its total rebuild, for a 32-18 halftime lead, and weathered a brief Jaguar charge for a 64-44 victory.

East began the game on a 14-2 tear and massaged that lead until the third period before Mill Valley pulled as close as four.

East then reasserted itself to lengthen the lead back out in the final period as it piled up a 27-15 advantage.

Connor Reig bolstered his candidacy for the All-Tournament Team with 18 points to lead East for the second straight game, while Trevor Thompson tallied 12 and Liam George furnished 10. Just as Thursday, Mill Valley did not have a player hit for double figures as Ike Valencia led the way with 7 to go along with his team-high 9 rebounds.

The Lancers will play Wichita Heights at 3:15 p.m. Saturday in what should be a quality fifth-place game, while the Jaguars will be looking for their second win of the year in the 1:30 p.m. seventh-place game against Hutchinson.
