Manhattan’s Trevor Hudgins is known more for his passing as he’s been an assist machine during his career.

But Friday night in the semifinals of the McPherson Invitational, Hudgins turned scorer, including all 9 Indian points in the second quarter to push Manhattan to a 5-point lead and the Indians went on for a 46-35 victory to advance to the 7 p.m. finals Saturday against the winner of McPherson and Maize.

Hudgins scored 7 points in the final 1:30 of the half, including back-to-back steals and scores. He finished with 24 points and was a demon on the defensive end with 5 steals and also found time to grab 4 rebounds.

Relentless Trey Lucas did yeoman work for Blue Valley West as the double-double machine scored 12 points and ripped down 16 rebounds.

Another key for Manhattan was the defensive work of Tommy Ekart, who was in the shirt of West sharpshooter Mikey Chalupa, who was coming off a 26-point game on Thursday. Chalupa did shake loose for a trio of 3-pointers, but Ekart very seldom let him out of his sight. Chalupa finished with 11 points.

Manhattan as a team forced 22 turnovers and amazingly had just three miscues in the 32 minutes.
