You couldn’t have asked for a better fifth-place game.

Wichita Heights and Shawnee Mission East played as though the McPherson Invitational championship was on the line in Saturday’s Sunshine Bracket.

Finally after two overtimes, the Falcons pulled away as Braxton Kirkendoll sparked the 91-82 victory with 9 points in the second OT.

Heights had stayed alive in the first overtime on a basket by Ethan Randelas with 1 second left on a putback.

A furious rally in the final 2 minutes of regulation by Heights tied the game as it wiped out a 9-point deficit and then appeared to have the game won, only to see East’s Liam George score with 4 seconds left. Heights had a chance to win the game, but Tyrell Andrews’ shot was off.

Heights scored 13 points in the second OT and didn’t allow a point the final 3:02.

As you would expect, the game was littered with double-digit scorers. Heights had an amazing six players in double figures, led by Devin Davis with 20. Also in doubles were Andrews (16), Kirkendoll (13), Izaiah Hale (13), K’Vonte Baker (10) and Trenton Driskill (10).

Connor Reig led the Lancers with 22 and was joined in twins by George (18), Kelyn Bolton (16) and Jack Schoemann (15).
