One had to wonder how the Maize Eagles were going to respond after Friday night's heart-breaking semifinal loss to McPherson in the Bullpups' Invitational.

But led by sophomore standout Caleb Grill, the Eagles had enough left in the tank for a  50-46 victory Saturday over Blue Valley West in the third-place game.

The Eagles had to hold off a spirited charge by West that saw it pull within a basket on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter.

Grill propelled Maize to 30-23 halftime lead with 11 points and continued to put the Eagles on his back in the second half to finish with 21. His two free throws with 14.7 seconds left iced the game.

Grant Bugbee, who was unconscious on Friday in the loss to McPherson with 31 points, was held to 3 as he was a focal point of the West defense.

Powerhouse Trey Lucas put the finishing touches on a terrific three-day performance for West with 14 points. Caleb Jones chipped in with 12.
