McPherson High’s wrestling team can take a big step toward the AVCTL Division III championship on Thursday if it can get past a worthy Augusta team on the Orioles’ home mat.
Match time is 6 p.m.
The Bullpups are 3-0 in D-III matches, while Augusta is 1-2. MHS defeated Buhler with a win in the final match in that dual, while Augusta lost by a point to the Crusaders. The Orioles also have lost to Winfield, which is MHS’ final opponent on the league docket.
The Bullpups are 11-2 in dual matches this season, many of them going down to the wire with Alex Grennan often the focal point of the outcome.
“Should be a tough match,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “We are going to be missing some varsity wrestlers, but we will fill all our weights. They had a one-point match with Buhler, so did we. Our kids are excited about the dual knowing what's on the line for league. Just like always, the dual will come down to pin and bonus points.”
After the dual, the Bullpups have the weekend off as they have been wrestling at a busy pace in January.
