A 4-5 matchup generally is the most competitive game of any in the first round.

Valley Center and Hays didn’t disappoint Thursday in the first round of the 22nd annual Mid America Classic, even if it didn’t start that way.

Valley Center was uber-impressive early with a 22-point first-quarter explosion and basically lived off that start as it held off a spirited Hays rally for a 49-42 victory.

Each time Valley Center needed a big play, 5-10 senior Taylor Latimer provided it. She scored 16 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Hornets into Friday’s 6:00 semifinal game to take on the winner of unbeaten Manhattan and Wichita Southeast.

Valley Center led 32-22 at the half, but Hays started to chip away by outscoring the Hornets 11-8 in the third quarter. The Indians continued to whittle away and got as close as 2 on a pair of Tasiah Nunnery free throws with 1:53 left in the game, but the Hornets then put the game away with 5 free throws.

Savannah Schneider led Hays with 11 points.
