The consolation round is like a second tournament in the Mid America Classic given how much star power there is in the winner's bracket.

And Hays appears to be the early favorite.

After a tough loss to Valley Center on Thursday, the Indians looked strong as they began their quest for fifth place with an easy 57-36 victory over Wichita Southeast in Friday’s first game.

Hays zipped to a 19-4 first-quarter lead and continued its offensive onslaught in the second period as it led by as many as 19 before settling for a 35-18 lead.

The Indians, now 7-4, could very well be the team McPherson High’s girls have to beat to advance to state as they’re in the Buhler sub-state along with Ulysses.

Hays will play either Andale or Dodge City at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, while Southeast tips off at 2 p.m. against the loser of that game for seventh.

Kallie Leiker scored all 13 of her points in the first half to lead Hays. Maddy Keller came off the bench for 10.

Sandra Pollard's 13 points were tops for Southeast, now 2-10.
