It wasn’t your average fifth-place game.

Saturday’s Mid America Classic consolation game between Hays and Dodge City was a matchup of Western Athletic Conference rivals, which added a little more spirit to the contest.

In what nearly was an historic game for all the wrong reasons, Hays just got past Dodge City 28-25 in a game that challenged the record for fewest combined points.

The record of 51 —  in McPherson’s 28-23 victory over Moundridge in the 2003 championship game — is still safe thanks to a late flurry by the teams. Hays' 28 points did tie the McPherson record for fewest points scored in a victory.

The pace wasn't that bad in the first half as Hays led 16-14 as Dodge shot just 21 percent and Hays 32.

Jaycee Dale's basket with just over a minute left gave Hays the lead for good and the Indians had to survive a last-second 3-point attempt by Madison Armstrong that would have tied the game.

Savannah Schneider's 11 points led Hays and Tia Bradshaw's 12 points for Dodge took game honors. The Indians finished 10 of 31 from the field to 9 of 40 for Dodge.
