McPherson High’s girls rode the Taylor-Mandi wave Saturday night to win the third-place game of the Mid America Classic.

Taylor Robertson’s 21 points and 19 more by Mandi Cooks powered the Bullpups to a 51-34 victory over Valley Center, improving them to 11-3 with their only losses to two No. 1-ranked teams and a No. 3 team.

Robertson was tremendously efficient by making 5 of 7 floor shots and all 9 of her free throws, while Cooks was 6 of 10 from the floor and 7 of 10 from the line.

After slogging to a 5-0 deficit, the Bullpups shook off the disappointment of Friday’s loss to Olathe South by dominating the rest of the half for a 29-16 lead and it never got under double digits the rest of the way as MHS’ defense held the Hornets to just 2 points in the third quarter.

“I was very pleased with the first half actually,” MHS coach Chris Strathman said. “Our effort was pretty good. When we were back and set in our defense they really struggled.”

The Bullpups held the Hornets to just 12 of 40 from the field and really concentrated on stopping Taylor Latimer, who had been superb the first two games. Latimer scored 8 points, one behind team leader Taylor Rowley. Strathman credited Cooks for her defensive work as she accepted the challenge with intensity.

The Bullpups now get some much-needed rest as they are off until Feb. 7 when they travel to Great Bend.
