ESPANOIA, N.M. — Central Christian College’s men’s basketball team continued its relentless march on Saturday, but was pushed to the limit in a 62-57 victory over Johnson and Wales.
The Tigers are 9-0 record in January and improved their overall mark to 17-5, while staying unbeaten in five AII games. Central is 16-2 in its last 18 games.
The Tigers came out sluggish as the Wildcat struck for the game’s first 7 points and the Coloradoans still led 32-31 at the half.
But Central came out strong in the second half and eventually grabbed the lead before holding off several Wildcat attempts to pull out the win.
“Give Johnson and Wales credit, they came out and played really well,” CCC coach Tony Romero said. “They really made it a grind-out game. It was not pretty at times for us, we had some careless turnovers and missed free throws in critical moments. We were on the ropes, and our seniors responded. A very long, but successful weekend."
Michael Gholston led a balanced CCC attack with 14 points, while Jubril Osagie added 13, Sam Clayborn tallied 11 and Ernest Burton scored 10.
The Tigers continue their five-game road trip on Wednesday when they head to Lawrence to take on Haskell, with tip time 7:30 p.m.
Central (62) — Gholston 14, Osagie 13, Clayborn 11, Burton 10, Nwosuh 7, Kuminga 5, Warren 2.
Johnson and Wales (57) — Bonner 8, Herman 9, Romero 14, Lee 3, Stone 17, Grant-Perry 6.
