MAIZE — McPherson’s seventh-grade A-boys finished the regular season with a tough 35-29 overtime loss to Maize on Monday.
Jayden Dukes scored 16 points as the Bullpups had only three players score.
“A tough-fought game throughout and I was so pleased with our complete game effort tonight,” said MMS coach Eric Burghart, whose team takes a 10-3 record into postseason play. “Maize’s defense gave us struggles in the second half and overtime and this loss is solely on my shoulders as I wasn’t able to get us into good enough sets for us to be successful. That’s a frustrating issue that will need to be corrected.”
The B-team also went overtime, but came away with a win to move to 4-9, 33-31. Ayden Johnson scored 12 points to pace the Bullpups.
“Another overtime game, but this one we were able to pull out,” Burghart said. “This was by far the best our offense has looked all season and it was really fun to peak at the right time with this squad. Ayden Johnson had a fabulous performance getting us into good plays and making tough shots, including a buzzer-beater to end the third and clutch free throws to pull us ahead. Brayden Conquest showed great effort by making big steals and flying up and down the court. The most fun thing is that every player who stepped on the floor really showed a Bullpup identity and what we’ve talked about how that should appear to ourselves and others and found ways to contribute to our eventual victory. With that being our last game, I look forward to seeing how these boys grow in the future.”
The A-team is off until Feb. 7 when it plays either Hutchinson or Salina South as part of the postseason tournament.
