McPherson High wrestling coach Doug Kretzer said his team will see just how it stacks up in Class 4A this weekend.

The Bullpups compete Friday and Saturday at Rose Hill, which has a bountiful 24 teams, including some of the best in 4A.

“Rose Hill is a tough tournament,” Kretzer said. “Good field for us to see with 18 of the teams in 4A.”

This is the Bullpups’ last appearance before next week’s dual with Winfield, which will determine the league champion. MHS is 4-0 in league matches and Winfield all along has been the team the Bullpups thought they had to beat to capture the title.

Kretzer said the Bullpups are still fighting injuries. He revealed that 195-pounder Alex Perkins is done for the season after fracturing his hand.

Kretzer has decided to leave three spots open this week due to health reasons, so MHS probably won’t be a factor in the team race. A wrestler who could have a big weekend is 145-pounder Scott Radke, who has wrestled well much of the year and Kretzer likes his chances.

Leading MHS have been state-ranked wrestlers Austin Eldredge and Rhett Edmonson. Eldredge is the top-ranked 138-pounder in 4A and Edmonson has been in the Top 4 at 106 all season.

Friday’s action begins at 11 a.m., with Saturday firing up at 10:00.  Derby, El Dorado and Andale could be teams to beat.
