WAXAHACHIE, Texas — Central Christian College’s baseball team was one inning away from a sweep in its season opener on Friday.

The Tigers led Southwestern Assemblies of God 8-6 in Game 1, but the Lions stunningly scored three runs in the final inning for a 9-8 walkoff victory.

Central doubled the Lions 6-3 in the nightcap, with Bryan Scott recording the first CCC win of the season. It was Southwestern Assemblies’s first loss after five victories.

“We played well today, but still have some things to work on as a team,” CCC coach Derk Kremer said. “We got to see our guys fight in a tough game.”

Kenny Cordova drove in three runs in Game 1 and Zane Howard added two RBIs. Hunter Wilcher had two hits and scored three runs.

Central had only four hits in Game 2. Mario Rivera scored two runs to back the pitching of Scott, who did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings.

The two teams are playing again today.
