Three was enough.

McPherson’s eighth-grade boys had only three players score on Saturday in the Pioneer League Tournament opener against Derby North, but the Bullpups still put up a big number in a 56-49 victory.

Jayton Alexander fired in 24 points, Max Alexander added 18 and Adam Elliott scored 14 to pace the 9-5 Bullpups. MMS will play Hutchinson Tuesday in the semifinals.

“Derby North came out in a Triangle-and-2 and it really gave us a lot of problems,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “They marked Max and Eli (Pyle) man-to man-and it took a while for us to settle in and find our stride. Jayton not being marked really stepped up and provided a huge spark for us not only offensively, but did a fantastic job on creating turnovers and havoc on defense. Coach (Matt) Sandbo, one of the best assistant coaches in our league, was greatly missed. But in his absence Coach (Treg) Fawl and Coach (Kurt) Kinnamon gave some great input to the game at halftime.”
