DERBY — McPherson’s seventh-grade girls came up with their most impressive basketball victory of the year on Tuesday with a 31-22 upset of top-seed Hutchinson in the semifinals of the Pioneer League Tournament.
Hutchinson stormed out to a 15-7 lead and still led 21-18 going into the fourth quarter before MMS turned on the afterburners.
Ella Schmid was on fire with 16 points. MMS will play either Salina Lakewood or Derby in the finals on Thursday.
“Another big come-from-behind win for the girls,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “In the last two games, the second-half effort of the starting five players has been tremendous. Likewise, the girls who have subbed in have also been steady. After being pressured into too many turnovers the first half, the girls finally settled down and played basketball. We adjusted our defense after the first quarter and the girls really locked down and guarded. In the second half, we were able to go over the top of their press and get some easy baskets. I applaud the girls for maintaining composure after the start and continuing to play hard and finish the game.”
MMS is now 12-3 on the year.
