DERBY — Top-seed McPherson dominated Salina Lakewood 38-14 on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Pioneer League Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament.
Kenzee Godwin led a balanced MMS offense with 10 points. The Bullpups, now 14-0, play Newton in the finals on Thursday.
“Winning the first game in a tournament is very difficult and the basket looks small at times and that was the case for us on some occasions, but all season we have always had our defense to lean on and tonight was no different on the that side of the ball for us,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “ We took them out of things they wanted to run and we sped them up and it allowed us to get a big win. Tonight for the first time we were able to play Lillia Diggs, who has been dealing with medical issues and it was awesome to have her play with us. She is a very special person and has always been a leader even when she could not play. She is a natural leader and she truly is a team above self player and I deeply respect her for that. She played some good defense and made some nice passes and scored.”
MMS (38) — Alexander 1, Myers 2, Berg 2, Diggs 2, Beam 4, Pyle 8, Malm 9, Godwin 10.
