McPherson’s seventh-grade boys held off Hutchinson 28-27 on Tuesday in the semifinals of the Pioneer League Tournament.
The Bullpups had to overcome a slow start to improve to 11-3 on the year. Seth Madron led MMS with 13 points and Jayden Dukes added 9.
“This was the slowest we've started all season and it put us in a 10-2 hole,” MMS coach Eric Burghart said. “After that, our work was cut out for us and we looked to Jayden Dukes to give us a spark in the second quarter. There was a series in the second when he gave us two offensive rebounds and after we weren't able to put it in once again he had a steal and gave us even another possession. Then in the second half, Seth Madron set the tone defensively and really turned the game in our favor. I was very proud with how tough and smart he played while dealing with foul trouble throughout the night. I don't think there was a player who had a better final two minutes than Braeden Ediger. He had 4 huge points and played amazing defense especially on Hutch's final possession.”
The championship game is set for Friday at the Roundhouse.
MMS (28) — Madron 13, Dukes 9, Ediger 4, Boese 2.
