GREAT BEND — The offense came and went, but the defense never rested.

McPherson High's boys overcame a sporadic offensive performance with lockdown defense on Tuesday for a 57-30 rout of Great Bend.

The Bullpups improved to 11-4 on the season with five AVCTL Division III games left to play.

"Very pleased. It was a big bonus that (6-5 forward Brayden) Smith didn't play," said MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon, whose team had not played for 14 days. "He makes a big difference for their team, another big inside body. And we kind of dominated on the glass I thought."

It was pretty much a no-contest from the start as the Bullpups led 15-5 after a quarter and 31-11 at the half despite missing several bunnies and suffering from a horrendous night at the foul line.

"We did a good job of getting the ball inside against their zone," Kinnamon said. "Anytime you hold somebody to 30 points, that's a pretty good defensive effort."

Jake Alexander starred on both ends, leading the Bullpups with 17 points and playing a major role in holding 6-6 Kody Crosby to 12, half of those coming in the final quarter in garbage time.

Ben Pyle scored 13 and Mason Alexander added 12. MHS had to finish with a rush just to shoot 8 of 20 from the line after being 3 of 13 at one point.

"We make free throws and we make layups and it's an 80-30 game," Kinnamon said. "And that's disappointing. But overall, after that long layoff, I thought we played with pretty good focus. We just can't turn the ball over carelessly. We've got to do a better job than that."

MHS won the JV game 42-16 as it was a balanced attack with no players hitting for double figures. Cody Stufflebean and Jayse Alexander scored 7 points apiece.

The MHS freshmen were defeated 55-49 despite a 17-point game by Kvon Richardson and 12 more from Kaleb Hoppes.
