GREAT BEND — There were no signs of rust for McPherson High's girls on Tuesday after a nine-day layoff.

The Bullpups came out firing by burying four 3-pointers in the first quarter against highly regarded Great Bend to lead 20-10 and they went on to race to a 69-38 victory to improve to 12-3 on the season.

"I thought the effort was really good from the start," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "We had some kids step up and make some shots to widen the gap early. We just had a lot of contributions from a lot of people."

Taylor Robertson scored just 7 points in the first half because of foul trouble, but made six straight shots in the third quarter and scored 13 in the period before finishing the game with 22.

MHS had seven players score at least 6 points. "We were very balanced other than Taylor," said Strathman, noting the other Bullpups stepped up in the first half when she had to sit. "I thought the girls shared the ball well."

What certainly pleased Strathman was the defensive work on Great Bend star Carley Brack, as the Bullpups frustrated her into a 3-of-16 shooting performance and she finished with only 9 points, second to team leader Carly Dreiling, who tallied 11.

"The girls did a good job (on Brack)," Strathman said. "It was mainly Riley (Hett) and Jordan (Bruner). Claire (Yowell) was on her a little bit and Lakyn (Schieferecke) was on her a little bit. When I saw after the game she had 9, I got to thinking and I estimated 16 or 18 shots she had taken."

The MHS JVs were able to get the game into running clock in the fourth quarter as they continued their perfect season with a 62-23 victory. Andrea Sweat tallied 19 points to lead the Bullpups, who had nine players break into the scoring column.

The MHS C-team was a 52-29 winner as Cassie Cooks was unstoppable with 27 points.
