MHS boys cruise by El Dorado

EL DORADO — It’s probably not a good idea to schedule McPherson High’s boys for Homcoming.

Homecoming is supposed to be a festive occasion, but there was no joy in El Dorado on Friday as a huge crowd was disappointed as the Bullpups defeated the Wildcats 68-42 for their sixth win in a row and improved their AVCTL record to 6-0 with four games left to play over the next two weeks.

“Workmanlike, but we messed some stuff up in the first half, some sets that got messed up and we were in the wrong defense,” MHS coach Kurt Kinnmon said. “Lot of times you can tell with high school-age guys whether they are ready to go and this team is kind of hard to read sometimes. But I thought we had a little shoot-around in the other gym during the JV game and it wasn’t as much a shoot-around as it was a mess-around. It’s one of those games where you come in and if you’re not focused you’re going to struggle a little bit early and I think that’s what happened to us.”

MHS led only 17-12 after the first quarter, but extended the lead to as many as 16 in the second period and there was never a sense the Bullpups were going to be challenged.

“I thought the thing I was most pleased with is that we had a lot of help-the-helper situations tonight, where guys got beat off the bounce and we had to help and then we rotated and we helped the helper. So I’m pleased with that.”

Ben Pyle scored 21 points and Jake Alexander added 11 as Kinnamon took a look at his bench players throughout the game with the outcome never in serious doubt.

MHS won the JV game 60-37 as Jace Kinnamon led a balanced attack with 13 points. Five Bullpups just missed double figures with 9 each.

The freshmen cruised to a 64-35 victory as Kaleb Hoppes tallied 16 points, and Riley Koehn and Sam Pyle furnished 10.

The Bullpups are home twice next week with Winfield coming to town on Tuesday and Buhler at the Roundhouse for Homecoming on Friday.
