McPherson College’s baseball team should have saved some of its first-game runs for the nightcap in its home opener on Saturday against William Penn.

Entering the day with a 4-0 record, the Bulldogs made it five straight in the opener with a 21-run onslaught to spark the 21-7 victory. But the Bulldogs’ bats then went cold and they suffered their first loss of the year in Game 2, 4-2.

The highlight of Game 1 was a nine-run fourth inning as the ball was flying on a rare warm February day. Mac also had two innings of five runs apiece.

Trevor Haycock and Evan Willow went yard for the Bulldogs. Dylan Fontenot had three hits and four RBIs. Jeremy Denton was the winning pitcher in relief as four hurlers shared the duties.

The Bulldogs led Game 2 2-0 until William Penn scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth, thanks to a Cory Russell homer, to hand Mac its first defeat.

The booming Bulldog bats were silenced to seven hits, six of them singles. Willow and Dylan Klava had two hits for Mac. Soren Yardall took the loss despite pitching a decent game.

The Bulldogs and Central Christian College will clash on Tuesday, weather permitting, at 6 p.m. at Light Capital Diamond. Mac then heads to Texas for some weekend action in Fort Worth.
