Softball Bulldogs start season going 1-4

FORT WORTH, Texas — McPherson College’s softball team headed to Texas to open its season over the weekend, going 1-4 in the Cowtown Classic.

Mac was busy on Friday going 1-2. It lost 4-3 to William Penn and 9-1 to Texas Wesleyan before outlasting Bacone College, 10-9. On Saturday, the Mac bats were quiet in 7-2 and 2-1 loses to Doane and Morningside College, respectively.

• Willam Penn 4, Mac 3 — Taylor Hires-Caulk hit a homer and Judith Salazar had two hits for the Bulldogs. Sydney Lang took the loss.

• Texas Wesleyan 9, Mac 1 — Mac had just a single hit, but did lead the game 1-0 early before it was all Texas Wesleyan. Chelsea Conrad’s double enabled Mac to avoid being no-hit.

• Mac 10, Bacone 9 — Azaria Romero scored the game-winner of a sac fly by Amanda Connell. Salazar blasted four hits to lead the offense, three of them doubles.

• Doane 7, Mac 2 — Mac led 2-0 but it was all Doane after that. The Nebraska team is receiving votes in the national poll.

Jessica Jones had two hits for Mac.

• Morningside 2, Mac 1 — The Bulldogs battled the No. 9-ranked team in the country the entire way. Again, the Bulldogs led 1-0 early and actually outhit the Mustangs 8-5.

Morningside won the game in the seventh. Salazar had two hits.

Box scores were not available.

The Bulldogs will be hosting Northwestern College of Iowa for two games on Saturday and Hastings College for a pair on Sunday.
