Cooks powers MHS girls to victory

The Winfield girls were determined to not let McPherson High's Taylor Robertson beat them.

And she didn't.

Robertson has enjoyed some big games against the Vikings in her career, so Winfield coach Jason VenJohn decided to junk things up with a box-and-one.

But then the Vikings had to deal with MHS' other major scoring weapon, Mandi Cooks.

Cooks dominated in the paint, scoring 15 points in the first half and 26 for the game as the Bullpups improved to 7-0 in the AVCTL and 14-3 overall with a 65-26 victory in their return to the Roundhouse after a long absence.

Cooks made 10 of 17 shots, scoring 9 of the team's first 11 points to set the tone for the night.

"We were kind of taking what they were giving us and that was Mandi inside," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "We did a good job of getting the ball inside to her."

It was only 27-16 at the half, but MHS ended the third quarter on a 14-3 rip and then started the fourth quarter with the first 14 points to get the game into running clock.

"We didn't get off to a good start as you could see," Strathman said. "Credit to Winfield for changing things up and junking us (box-and-one) a little bit."

Robertson took only 8 shots and finished with 13 points.

The 3-ball came and went for the Bullpups at times, going 2 of 16 in the first half before they made 6 of 12 after the break to finish 8 of 28 for the night.

"We had 16 3s (attempts) in the first half and made only two and that's not good for us," Strathman said. "That's a big part of our game. Then we were 6 of 12 in the second half and that was much better."

Sarah Hammer, who made three 3s in the first 5 minutes, scored just a single point the rest of the way to finish with a team-high 10.

The MHS JVs were a 46-31 winner as nine players scored, led by Lakyn Schieferecke with 10 points.

In the C-game, the Bullpups were raining 3-pointers as they made 11 in a 64-28 rout. Katelyn Beam knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Ashlie Stout drained three on her way to 15 points. Also in doubles were Cassie Cooks with 11 and Lauren Hein chipped in with 10.

The Bullpups are home on Friday to take on arch-rival Buhler. It's "Think Pink" Night.
