When McPherson High was in Class 5A, the goal was to get eight or more wrestlers on to state.
Now that MHS is 4A, the goal has dropped a bit because the Bullpups have to outlast double the teams as it’s gone from seven other opponents to 14.
MHS coach Doug Kretzer says sometimes it’s all about attitude whether a wrestler makes state.
“Hopefully we can get between four to seven through,” Kretzer said as his team competes Friday and Saturday in Buhler for the right to advance to Salina next week. “It's a tough regional. I told the team you can throw the records out the window. This tournament comes down to who wants it the most.”
Virtual locks for the Bullpups figure to be Rhett Edmonson at 106 and Austin Eldredge at 138. Edmonson has been ranked in the Top 4 most of the season, while Eldredge is No. 1 at 138
Scott Radke, at 145, is another Bullpup who is a strong candidate, while several others can make it if they perform well.
Other teams on hand are Abilene, Chapman, Clay Center, Colby, Concordia, Goodland, Hays, Larned, Nickerson, Rock Creek, Scott City, Smoky Valley and Wamego. Smoky Valley has at least four top finishers in Noah Lackey, Beck Elliott, Austin Lustfield and Allan Wampler.
The Bullpups have battled injuries and illness throughout the past month, but should still do well. Kretzer has settled on this lineup to take:
106 — Rhett Edmonson
113 — Landon Crews
120— EJ Kretzer
126 —Seth Morgan
132 —Brynton Crews
138 — Austin Eldredge

152 — Jonah Clarke
160 — Mason Thrash
170 — Luke Thompson
182 — Bailey Yarborough
195 — Kourtney Craig
220 — Alex Grennan
285 — Donavon Bailey
