OTTAWA — Central Christian College’s fledgling wrestling team has its first national qualifier.

Devontae Fitzgerald, at 149 pounds, advanced to nationals during Saturday’s South Region Qualifier.

He took second place, losing to Bethany’s John Risewick in the finals. Earlier in the season it was thought he would take it as a redshirt year, but he changed his mind and wound up competing.

“Devontae competed well today at Ottawa,” CCC coach Tom Carr said. “His focus and determination showed through his performance. As a new program it is important to set a high standard, which Devontae has done both athletically and academically at Central Christian."

The national meet is in two weeks at Topeka.
