WICHITA — The McPherson Aquapups had a tremendous meet this past weekend at the District South Championships.

“It was wonderful to see the payoff for all of their hard work over the past 6 months,” McPherson coach Kyle Banman said.

Here are the highlights, according to Banman:

• Finalists •

• “Matthew Powers capped off a stellar season with an even more stellar meet, by making finals in all 6 of his races, with championship-winning swims in the 100 and 200 breaststroke,” Banman said. “With those swims he earned Missouri Valley Swimming Championship times of 1:12.77 on the 100, and 2:39.96 on the 200. He also took 6th on the 100 fly (1:05.05), 7th on 200 free (2:07.52), and 8th on 100 free (57.22) and 100 back (1:07.85).”

• “Roary Whorton made finals in five of his six events, and earning his first-ever MVS Champ qualifiers on the 50 and 100 free,” Banman said. “His best finishes were 2nd on the 100 free at a time of 1:13.25, and 3rd on the 200 free at 2:49.83.”

• “Rhys Vanderhoof swam finals and finished 5th overall on the 50 free with a time of 26.32. He was also the first alternate for finals on the 100 fly at 1:10.79,” Banman said.

• “Danica Brunk took 7th in finals on the 100 back at 1:16.90, and was also the first alternate on 50 free at 30.11,” Banman said. “She swam personal bests in all six of her races.”

• Other Highlights •

“We had two 9 year olds - Claire Schmidt and Bree Pickerell - compete in their first "post-season" meet,” Banman said.  “Kierstan Trost added a District time with a bonus swim on the 100 IM, a 4.84 cut to 1:22.48.  She also cut 3.92 on 100 back to 1:19.09. Zoey Whorton dropped 7.25 on 200 free to 2:29.78.”
