HUTCHINSON — Maize’s ninth-grade boys capped off a furious comeback with a last-second 3-pointer to defeat McPherson High 61-60 in the championship game of the Hutchinson Invitational Basketball Tournament on Monday.

The Bullpups led by as many as 10 at one point and were still up as many as 7 with 3 minutes left, but the Eagles stormed back.

“We had the lead down the stretch, but did not execute like we should have,” MHS coach Treg Fawl said. “We failed to get two defensive rebounds on back-to-back possessions that allowed them to stay in the game. We also fouled on a 3-pointer on the very next possession.”

Fawl, however, said the Bullpups can take away a lot from the loss.

“I told them in the locker room they will learn from this and be better in the future,” he said. “You can’t make those mistakes against a good team when the game is on the line. Also, give them credit for making the shot at the end of the game.”

Cody Stufflebean had a monster game for the Bullpups with 28 points. Kvon Richardson scored 12 and Kaleb Hoppes added 11. MHS had a great night at the foul line by making 23 of 29, including 7 of 7 by Stufflebean and 7 of 8 by Richardson.

MHS is back in action tonight at Circle.

MHS (60) — Hoppes 11, Richardson 12, Stufflebean 28, Lopez 3, Koehn 1, Courtney 5.
