Shooting In Newton

Four dead including a suspect after police responded to shots fired in the 2100 block of North Spencer. Around 12:30 Thursday morning officers responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired.

As officers cleared the house, they discovered 3 men slain and 3 persons living.

Outside the home officers encountered a man armed with a shotgun. The man refused to obey commands given by officers and the resulting argument ended with an officer shooting the man. The man was rushed to the hospital but later died.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The 3 women in the home during the shooting are in custody and another witness has been brought in for questioning.

It is believed that the man shot by police was the shooter that killed the men inside the home. The home and suspect were known to police. Drugs were a possible motivator for the killings.

"Our community is safe right now," Sheriff Gay told us. "This was very much a targeted thing."

Police are waiting for a warrant so they can search the home.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist in the investigation.
