3 Bullpups win state mat openers

SALINA – It was a 3-2 start for the McPherson High wrestling team today in the first round of the Class 4A State Tournament at the Bicentennial Center.

Regional champions Rhett Edmonson at 106 and Austin Eldredge at 138 won their matches easily, Edmonson (27-10) by a technical fall and Eldredge (38-3) by a fall.

The surprise came at 182 where MHS’ Bailey Yarborough pulled off a 13-4 upset of Columbus’ Peyton Hale, who had entered the tournament with just two losses.

Scott Radke, at 145, lost a narrow 4-2 decision and 132-pounder Brynton Crews lost by a fall. Both are now in the consolation bracket.

Edmonson will have his hands full in the second round as he takes on Clearwater’s Hunter Reddick, who has just one loss on the year.

Eldredge goes up against Andover Central’s Bryant Page, who is 26-13. Yarborough, who scrambled the bracket with his win, has drawn Justin Lamatsch of Pratt, who is 26-14. Yarborough, with his win, is 25-9.
