MHS girls finish regular season 17-3

You can put in about any tape of the McPherson High girls this season and see a familiar theme that again played out here Friday.

The Bullpups jumped on Augusta for the game's first 11 points and it was a harbinger of things to come as they had the game into running clock at the start of the start of the fourth quarter before completing a 68-28 victory on Senior Night that featured Emma Yowell and Jordan Bruner.

"I thought we got off to a great start and played off of that," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "The focus overall in the second half was better than it has been. We turned the ball over only twice the whole second half and had only six for the game, so that's one thing I look at to tell me how mentally focused we are. Real proud of our effort and our mental energy tonight, too."

MHS' pressure defense made life miserable early as the Orioles turned it over 13 times in the first quarter and the offense was in the good hands of Taylor Robertson, who scored 13 straight points midway through the period and she had 17 in the first 8 minutes.

Robertson finished with 28 points, making 12 of 17 shots. Mandi Cooks had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Hannah Hageman had a nice night off the bench with 10 points.

The success gives MHS a final 17-3 regular-season record and it again finished 10-0 in AVCTL Division III, giving it an amazing 49-1 league record over the five years in the division. It will open sub-state play on Friday at Buhler against the host Crusaders in the third meeting of the year between the teams, the first two won handily by the Bullpups.

The MHS JVs finished a perfect season with a 58-17 triumph as they now have won 62 games in a row after a 15-0 season. Claire Yowell led a balanced attack with 12 points, while Lauren Hein and Andrea Sweat added 10.

The MHS C-team also wrapped up a perfect 17-0 season with a 40-28 success. Cassie Cooks topped the scoring with 12 points and Sweat furnished 10. Nine players in all scored.
