BUHLER — The famed "Bullpup Blitz" decided Saturday’s Class 4A Division I sub-state championship game.

As has been the case in most of their games since the Mid America Classic, the McPherson High girls shellshocked Hays with a 26-6 first-quarter blast that propelled them to a 67-37 rout to once again advance to the state tournament next Thursday in Salina.

"First and foremost I was really pleased with how we came out yet again and jumped all over them right from the start," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "I was a little bit surprised last night that Buhler played straight-up man-to-man and Hays did as well. We didn't see any junk (defense) this weekend and that really surprised me. We prepare for it all the time and the kids are getting used to playing against it, but we didn't have to face it."

MHS will take a 19-3 record into state, with pairings to be announced Sunday morning. Amazingly, it's the 22nd time in the last 25 years the Bullpups have qualified.

"It never gets old," Strathman said. "It's quite a run, but we don't take it for granted. I know we don't go quite as crazy sometimes as other teams do because we've done it a lot. But our kids know it's special and it's something we focus on. It's a big week coming up. We'll embrace it and embrace the challenge."

All-Stater Taylor Robertson keyed the early run by scoring 13 points in the first quarter and added 11 in the second quarter for good measure for a 24-point half. She went on to finish with 28.

"Things pile up pretty quick for her sometimes," Strathman said. "She played great, but I thought all of our kids played very well today."

The 3-ball, such an integral part of the Bullpup offense, was at the forefront as they knocked down 10 of 22, 5 of 7 by Robertson.

Mandi Cooks was the only other Bullpup in double figures with 10 points.

The Bullpups played without injured senior Jordan Bruner, who was held out due to a sprained ankle, but Strathman anticipates her being ready for the state opener.
