Viking boys make state again

CONCORDIA — It’s back-to-back for the Smoky Valley boys.

The Vikings turned in an incredible second half on Saturday night to defeat host Concordia 63-50 to advance to the Class 4A Division II State Tournament for the second straight year.

Down 28-22 at the half, the Vikings charged back to take a two-point lead, 38-36, going into the fourth quarter, then ambushed the Panthers with a 25-point salvo.

Nick Reinert was monstrous for the Vikings by pouring in 24 points. Ryan Weldy added 12 and Jacob Adams added 10.

The Vikings, 15-7, are the No. 7 seed at state, which is played at Emporia’s White Auditorium. They play the 3:00 game on Wednesday against Holcomb (21-1).

3:00 — Smoky Valley (15-7) vs. Holcomb (21-1)

4:45 — Rock Creek (18-4) vs. Hayden (16-6)

6:30 — Wichita Collegiate (21-1) vs. Frontenac (14-8)

8:15 — Burlington (17-5) vs. Pratt (17-5)
