McPherson College Band Concert March 13 to Feature Halstead High School, College Music Instructors
The Spring 2017 Band Concert at McPherson College will highlight both MC bands, two of the college’s instructors, and band students from Halstead High School.
Kyle Hopkins, associate professor of music and director of bands at McPherson College, said it has been an annual tradition to present a combined concert with a local high school group. Halstead will join MC at the concert March 13 under the direction of Derrick Hibler, Jr.
“They are an enthusiastic band program,” Hopkins said, “And the concert will be a lot of fun.”
Starting at 7:30 p.m., the concert will kick off with the MC Jazz Band, featuring Gregg Walker, adjunct instructor of woodwinds. Walker will solo on “Harlem Nocturne” by Earle Hagen. The jazz band will follow up with the epic classic by Charles Mingus – “Better Get it in Your Soul.”
The Halstead High School Band will then take the stage before the MC Concert Band plays the wind band staple “Prelude, Sicilano and Rondo” by Malcolm Arnold. Following will be “Carnival of Venice” – featuring on trumet Isaac Hopkins, adjunct instructor at MC. The concert band will finish with an arrangement by Jack Stamp of “Be Thou My Vision.”
Concluding the performance with be a joint performance of both MC bands and Halstead High School band of “America the Beautiful” arranged by James Swearingen.
The Spring Concert will be held in the college’s Brown Auditorium. The concert is free and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.
