It’s becoming more and more evident that Christie Betker has a chance to be one of the top McPherson College softball pitchers in school history.
The freshman from Reno, Nev. — already named KCAC Pitcher of the Week once this season — struck out 17 on Tuesday to lead the Bulldogs to a sweep of crosstown counterpart Central Christian College.
The Bulldogs are now 8-12 and host the McPherson Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Wall Park. They will play four games, three of them on Friday.
Central fell to 0-16 and plays today at Bethel.
• Mac 10, Central Christian 2 — Betker blinded the Tigers with 14 strikeouts and did not have a walk in picking up the win. She allowed only five hits and one earned run.
The Bulldogs rapped out 15 hits, including three by Jessica Jones. Jasmine Curiel had two hits and drove in four runs, while Ali Smith, Erica Almaraz and Chelsea Conrad all had two hits. Almaraz scored four runs.
Kasi Kraus was about the only Tiger to solve Betker as she was 3 for 3.
• Mac 8, Central 4 — The Tigers appeared to be on their way to a split, but the Bulldogs erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to charge to the victory.
Judith Salazar was 3 for 4 to lead the Bulldogs, while Jones added two hits. Kraus and Ashly Westgarth had two hits apiece for CCC. Kraus was throwing a nice game for the Tigers until running into trouble in the sixth.
Sydney Lang started for Mac, but Betker came on to earn the win, fanning three in her two scoreless innings.
