Ready or not, McPherson High’s girls soccer team will open the season Thursday with a road game against Salina South.
The action begins at 5 p.m. with the JV game, with the varsity starting about 6:30.
“We aren’t going to be firing on all cylinders yet, but we will be as ready as possible and will play hard,” said MHS coach Chris Adrian, whose 16-3-1 team took third in the state last year after taking second the year before. “The weather has been pretty good, which has allowed us to get as much practice in as possible, but as expected the five basketball players on the team just joined us this week so I anticipate we might be a little rusty.”
The Bullpups return their top three scorers in Aislinn Hughes, Alayna Wallace and Jessie Kynaston, so they should be explosive offensively. The defense must replace Wall of Famer Breckon Kaufman, a multiple All-State selection, but there’s plenty of top returnees on that side of the pitch as well.
“Fortunately we are returning the majority of the team from last year, so I think we will be OK,” Adrian said. “Salina South was a young team last year and has a good ninth-grade class coming in, so Thursday’s game is going to be a good early season test for us.”
After this game, MHS is off until March 28 when it hosts its annual invitational tournament.
