WICHITA — In a stunning announcement, Friends University revealed on Wednesday that longtime coach Monty Lewis has been fired.

Lewis, easily the most colorful coach in the KCAC, was 93-52 in 14 seasons at the Wichita school. A school official told The Wichita Eagle that Lewis’s won-loss record was not the reason for his dismissal.

Matt Welch, Lewis’ longtime assistant coach, recently was fired, according to the published report.

Dion Meneley will be serving as interim head coach.

Prior to his time at Friends, Lewis had coached at his alma mater, Southwestern, for 8 years and was 60-32. He also spent a year at West Texas A & M as an offensive coordinator.

Lewis is Friends’ all-time leader in wins and is No. 7 in overall wins among active coaches in the NAIA.
