WICHITA — KCAC softball powerhouse Friends University cooled off McPherson College on Wednesday as the Falcons ended the Bulldogs’ eight-game winning streak by sweeping the doubleheader in the conference opener for both teams.

The first game was terrific for 4 1/2 innings as neither team dented the scoreboard, but Friends scored four runs in the fifth and made it stand up for a 4-0 victory.

Mac, which had been tearing the cover off the ball in its hot streak, was held to three hits by Heather Bresling. Erica Almaraz had a double for the Bulldogs.

Other than the fifth inning, reigning KCAC Pitcher of the week Christie Betker threw a strong game, striking out eight.

Friends was a 9-1 winner in Game 2, scoring in every inning. Mac again had just three hits, two by Kortney Jones. Sydney Lang took the loss.

The Bulldogs are now 14-14 overall, while Friends, coached by McPherson College graduate Tony Segovia, is 19-5.

Mac hosts Saint Mary at 1 p.m. Saturday.
