ANDALE — McPherson High’s Elle Barrett hasn’t missed a beat.

The Class 4A 2016 champion in the long jump and triple jump, Barrett opened her season on Friday by winning her two specialty events in the Andale Relays.

Barrett went 16-1 in the long jump and 35-1/2 in the triple jump.

Team scores were not kept in the meet that also included Hesston, Carroll, Valley Center, Kingman, Pratt and Garden Plain.

“We had a great night in Andale,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “I was proud of how well our kids competed in some challenging conditions. We saw some great PRs (personal records) already in the first meet. We are getting stronger in the distance events and throwing events. This is going to boost our team results throughout the year.”

Newcomer Emma Ruddle had a nice meet by winning the 100 hurdles in 16.14 and was second in the 100 in 13.4. Morgan Howard was second to Ruddle in the 100 hurdles in 16.75.

It was a solid day for Kenzie Goering, who will augment Barrett in the jumps this year. She was second in the long jump in 15-6 and third in the triple jump in 32-5.

For the boys, the standout of the day was Dawson VanGoethem, who won the discus in 133-9.
