A special night has been planned for Saturday, April 22, at the McPherson American Legion Post 24, 401 N. Main St.
The Legion will be honoring its storied basketball history, including the 1949 national championship team and the 1950 team that competed in the national tournament that McPherson hosted.
Guest of honor is Carl Kasey, the last living member of the 1949 national tournament team. Kasey was a longtime McPherson school teacher and even at age 94, is still very active in the community. He serves as a tutor to youth and also is very active in his church and with the American Legion as he’s a server for the monthly Family Night.
The gathering begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour, followed by a full-course meal at 6 p.m. that includes baked steak, potato, vegetable salad and dessert.
Following the meal, there will be a program honoring Kasey and the teams. Kasey was honored during the 1949 tournament with the sportsmanship award.
There will be memorabilia on display for your viewing pleasure, including jerseys, jackets and warmups from that era.
Advanced tickets, for just $10 apiece, are available from Jim LaDuke at State Farm Insurance, 900 N. Main, or from Dan Hervey at the Investment Center, 210 E. Euclid. There is a 250-person capacity, so get your tickets early.
