NORTH NEWTON — Bethel College’s softball team entered Saturday’s doubleheader as the KCAC’s surprise team so far, starting conference play with a 5-3 record after being picked in the second division.
Meanwhile the McPherson College Bulldogs had started 0-5 in the KCAC, including two losses apiece to leaders Friends and Kansas Wesleyan.
But Mac turned the standings upside down with an 8-5 and 21-6 sweep of the Threshers. The Bulldogs are now within a game of .500 overall at 16-17.
• Mac 8, Bethel 5 — Judith Salazar drove in five runs and Christie Betker picked up the win in a game not as close as the final score indicates.
Mac was up 8-1 before Bethel struck for four runs in the final inning. Betker struck out 10 in the contest.
Katie Holmes added two hits for Mac. Nine different Bulldogs had at least one hit.
Mac trailed 1-0 before attacking the Threshers with three runs in both the third and fourth innings.
• Mac 21, Bethel 6 — A pair of four-run innings were huge, but nothing compared to a nine-run seventh.
The Bulldogs crushed 20 hits to make a winner of pitcher Sydney Lang. Holmes and Azaria Romero hit homers for Mac and both drove in five runs. Holmes had three hits and four runs scored, while Romero had two hits.
Other big hitters were Salazar (three hits, two RBIs), Jessica Jones (four runs scored, two hits), Kortney Jones (two hits, three RBIs), Ali Smith (four runs, three hits, two RBIs) and Jasmine Curiel (three hits, two RBIs).
The Bulldogs are hosting York College in a makeup twinbill today.
